Job Overview


The EAL tutor is responsible for planning and implementing English as an additional language tutor sessions for a visually impaired adult learner who is not able to attend classes. The tutor provides tutoring 2 hours per week in a downtown location (New Directions – 514 St. Mary Ave.)

Role and Responsibilities


Conduct needs assessment



 Plan lesson content based on results of student needs assessment

 Plan and deliver lessons that meet the learning objectives of the learner

 Schedule tutoring sessions in conjunction with New Directions and the learner

 Submit monthly activity records

 Attend team and or learner intake meetings when required

Qualifications


Teaching English as a Second Language Certificate from a TESL Canada certified institution



 Undergraduate degree

 Experience teaching and or tutoring foundations level

 Experience working with adult immigrant learners

 Knowledge of and sensitivity to the settlement process for newcomers

 Sensitivity to the special needs of the learner

 Understanding of various learning strategies that can assist a visually impaired foundations learner

Job Details


Location: 514 St. Mary Avenue – tutor sessions 397 Carlton Street – base and resources



 Schedule: To be determined by the learner in consultation with the tutor, and New Directions support staff. 2 hours per week tutoring + 1 hour planning time

 Levels: Foundations

 Hourly Rate: $28.00 per hour

 This is a fixed term position running for 12 weeks, starting as soon as possible. Possibility of extension
