We are seeking a

Newcomer Community Development Worker

Term position:  Half-time to March 31, 2016 Flexible hours

 

Position Overview: The Newcomer Community Development Worker is a new position as of June 1, 2014. The position was created to empower eligible newcomers (individuals, couples, families, groups and whole communities) in their lifelong and successful settlement in Canada. The incumbent will be responsible for a range of duties and activities including:

·      Providing group workshops to deliver Information & Orientation materials

·      Creativity and initiative in developing and facilitating groups that meet the targets of the program

·      Acting as a link between communities and a range of other local authorities and other service providers

·      Providing/developing information and orientation activities

·      Providing referrals for supports for newcomers

·      Fostering cultural awareness and social inclusion of newcomers within the larger community

Qualifications:

·        Master Degree (e.g. Marriage and Family Therapy, Social Work, Psychology, Community Development, or other social science related degree) preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 

·        Experience with Community Development

·        Demonstrated experience with working cross-culturally with diverse immigrant and refugee populations including the ability to connect/engage and maintain relationships

·        Experience with group development, organization, and facilitation

·        Knowledge of the impact of psychological trauma (PTSD) within the newcomer population

·        Understanding of the challenges faced by newcomers

·        Experience working with multiple systems

·        Excellent written and oral communication skills.  Proficiency in other languages an asset

·        Presentation skills: experience conducting workshops and presentations to professionals, community members and agencies

·        Well-organized, self-motivated and able to work as part of a team and with minimal supervision

·        Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
