Position Purpose

The Nutrition Program Assistant is responsible for ensuring the nutritional needs of students are met according to the Canada Food Guide recommendations.


Key Areas of Accountability

  1. Nutritional support for youth.
  2. Menu planning, budgeting, shopping and food preparation.
  3. Facilitation of parent and student workshops.

Educational Background

  • Knowledge of and training in Nutrition.

  • Good problem solving and multi-tasking ability.
  • Experience working with diverse groups of people, including youth.
  • Experienced in budgeting and menu planning within a limited budget.
  • Able to work independently
  • Experience in facilitating workshops for students and parents e.g. canning, gardening, menu planning, local food resources.
  • Experience and knowledge of inner-city youth.
  • Experience in gardening and food preservation.
  • Knowledge of local food resources.
  • Must have a driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
  •  Physically able to fill the requirements of the position.

Program Facilitator – Group Mentoring

Position Purpose

The Mentor Facilitator is responsible for developing and facilitating a positive, safe and effective group mentoring program for high school youth working in cooperation with the Mentor and Volunteer Recruitment Coordinator.  The responsibilities include facilitating and organizing mentoring activities, workshops, speakers, field trips in the key mentoring areas.  The key mentoring areas include health & wellness, nutrition, recreation, sports, arts, music and culture.

Key Areas of Accountability

  2. Development, Facilitation and Evaluation of Mentoring Activities.

Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Develop, facilitate and evaluate an effective mentoring program that supports student growth in emotional and social development.
  • Model diversity in resources used; ensure inclusive program materials and practices.
  • Meet regularly with Coordinator and maintain weekly communication process to work together on strategies for improving or strengthening participation in mentoring.
  • Report any incidents or issues involving youth, volunteers or facilities, per the defined policies and procedures.
  • Training and delivery  of You Can Mentorship Program
  • Encourage cooperation, sharing of community space; ensure security of resources.
  • Work with Site Support Staff to maintain security, clean up and safety routines.
·        Facilitation of small groups with youth aged 12-19 years with different cultural backgrounds.
·        Other responsibilities as assigned by Coordinator of Mentoring and Volunteer Recruitment.

Educational Background

  • Relevant post-secondary education, college or university or a combination of studies and experience.
  • Minimum 2 years work experience as a mentor / youth worker / program leader with high school youth.
  • Demonstrated leadership and role model experiences.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of social needs of youth, group development and dynamics
  • Strong facilitation and leadership skills.
  • Specific training / experience with special needs or new language learners
  • Experience working with volunteers, including training and developing resources
·        An understanding of the strengths and capacities of, as well as the barriers and challenges faced by inner city youth.   
·        Experience working with low income, Aboriginal, Immigrant and Refugee communities.
·        Demonstrated leadership , interpersonal and communication skills
·        Able to work independently as well as part of a team

Work Conditions

  • Travel between  site locations within the community.

Position Purpose

The Program Facilitator – Tutoring is responsible for developing and facilitating a positive, safe and effective tutoring program for Pathways’ youth working with volunteer tutors.  Youth in the Pathways program have a range of abilities and interests that reflect a variety of learning needs; the aim of the tutoring program is to support the development of effective study skills in core academic areas.  Key responsibilities of this role include: developing the youth engagement skills of tutors, identifying special needs and learning styles, and matching suitable tutoring techniques to each youth.

Responsibilities and Tasks

·        Facilitate volunteer tutor training and on-going supports such as communication, resources (handouts / materials) for volunteers.
·        Facilitate and or support literacy activities.
·        Organize scheduling, space, routines, materials and data collection at each programming site.
  • Develop, model and monitor the volunteer tutor’s role and tutoring techniques.
  • Develop routines for matching tutors to students; monitor effectiveness and progress.
  • Develop specific resources for youth with learning challenges.
  • Model diversity in resources used; ensure inclusive program materials and practices.
  • Keep updated on high school curriculum changes and challenges; ensure resource materials and programming supports those changes / challenges.
  • Contribute, collect and act on information in student logs or monitoring sheets, on information from SPSW and teacher surveys.
  • Report any incidents or issues involving youth, volunteers or facilities, per the defined policies and procedures.
  • Substitute as needed for absent volunteer tutors.
  • Problem solves difficulties; celebrate successes with students, tutors and staff.
  • Prepare recommendations for program improvements per program processes.
  • Encourage cooperation sharing community space; ensure security of resources..
  • Work with Site Support Staff to maintain security, clean up and safety routines.
  • Prepare monthly report and timesheet.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by Coordinator of Tutoring and Literacy.


Educational Background

  • Post secondary degree in Education with two years of classroom experience.
  • Minimum of two years experience working with inner-city youth.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Current curriculum knowledge of Math / Science / English / French / Social Sciences in Grades 9 - 12
  • Specific training / experience with special needs or new language learners
  • Knowledge of high school culture and credit system
  • Experience working with volunteers, including training and developing resources
  • Experience applying equity practices and working with diverse groups of people
  • Other languages an asset (per community needs)
  • Knowledge of social needs of youth, group skills and group dynamics
  • Experience working in low income communities and Aboriginal communities.


Dimensions of Work

  • Primary interface is with the volunteers and program youth
  • Coordination and sharing of  information with Coordinators, SPSW and other program staff regarding youth participation and progress

  • Hours – late afternoons into early evening.

Student Parent Support Worker (SPSW)

Six month term position (1 position)




Position Purpose

The Student Parent Support Worker is responsible for building relationships with up to a maximum of 30 students and families in the Pathways program, which includes monitoring each students’ progress, providing advocacy and counseling support as needed, offering referrals to other support agencies as appropriate, and managing the financial incentives of the program for the students.

The Student Parent Support Worker liaises with family, school, and Pathways programming staff in order to ensure that each student is taking full advantage of all of the supports available to him / her.  The SPSW also participates in the coordination and provision of annual activities, mentoring and life skills, services such as student and parent recruitment and registration. A long term commitment is required to ensure trust and relationship building process with students.

Responsibilities and Tasks

·        Establish and maintain positive and supportive relationships with students, parents / guardians and secondary school staff.
·        Establish a regular meeting process with students and document all interactions.  Follow up on all action plans developed with the student.
·        Identify specific educational, social and emotional challenges / gaps and the appropriate supports required to address those challenges / gaps.  Initiate the required activity to ensure appropriate supports are provided to the student.
·        Establish and maintain a process to regular obtain attendance data, school credits, suspension reports and any school learning assessments.  Validate data for accuracy and completeness.  Monitor and analyze trends; ensure students retain eligibility for financial / program supports.
·        Establish and implement a process to deliver financial supports to eligible students and any applicable program supports.
·        Review student progress review on a regular basis with Program Director / Coordinator of SPSWs and ensure information flow with program team members as appropriate.
·        Ensure lines of communication are open with students, parents and schools
·        Support and when appropriate, advocate for students to parents / guardians, staff and / or school boards regarding decisions affecting their educational development.  Engage support of Program Director / Coordinator of SPSWs per program processes and / or policies.
·        Support in the development and / or implementation of ongoing program evaluation processes.  For example: student surveys, parent focus groups.
  • Actively participate in all working teams or communities of practice (local program team, all SPSWs, others as defined) to share knowledge and collaborate in problem-solving.
  • Develop an appropriate knowledge of community and social service resources

Educational Background

  • Relevant college or university degree or certificate  or combination of experience and studies

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Minimum 2-years of experience working with inner city youth
  • Ability to work respectfully with diverse groups of people, including Aboriginal communities
  • Knowledge and / or experience in at least two of the following areas:
o   community development and resources,
o   social services and resources,
o   secondary education system,
o   special education,
o   second language learners,
o   youth development
o   Aboriginal communities
  • Demonstrated  leadership skills and abilities
  • Other languages an asset, specifically languages of the community
  • Knowledge of barriers that impact educational success for inner-city youth.


Dimensions of Work

  • Primary interface is with the student; liaison role with parents, school staff and other agencies when referrals are necessary
  • Direct reporting relationship to Program Director in Years 1 – 2 of program
  • Direct reporting relationship changes to Coordinator of SPSWs by Year 3 of program, or when there are at least 6 SPSWs in place
  • Coordination and sharing information with Program Facilitators (Tutoring, Mentoring (Group, Specialty, Career)) regarding students


Work Conditions
  • Travel between multiple locations:  local program office, schools.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including evening and rotating weekends
