UPCOMING EVENT - NEW CANADIAN VOICES

The Past is Another Country - a collection of stories from 12 new Canadians.

Join us on
Monday, June 27th, 7 pm at the Carol Shields Auditorium in the Millennium Library for a unique celebration of new voices, new writing, and new Canadians, all participants in the Finding Your Voice (FYV) writing program for new Canadians kindly supported by the Winnipeg Public Library.  There will be refreshments, readings, a few speeches here and there and lots of socializing and smiling, maybe even some autograph signing!

We have a one of a kind book featuring new writing from 12 new Canadians from China, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Korea, Macedonia, Nigeria, the Philippines, Poland, Taiwan, and Uzbekistan.  All contributing writers were participants of the FYV writing program for new Canadians.  Some arrived in Canada with next to no English, others with very high levels, but all of them share the experience of being a newcomer in a new home country, and a desire to share stories that matter to them.  The book also features an impressive EAL questions and activities section, making it a unique and valuable learning resource in more ways than one.

The book is being freely given to a select group, (1000 copies), distributed to community organizations, libraries (so yes it can be borrowed), EAL programs and other interested individuals and associations.  We will be accepting donations for the Finding Your Voice project fund to allow us to continue giving voice to some of the many powerful stories written by new Canadians from the Finding Your Voice writing program.

For more information, please contact the very proud Finding Your Voice program founder and facilitator, Janine LeGal at 475-3816 (home/office) or 799-0980 (cell).
