International College of Manitoba International College of Manitoba (ICM) is a pathway college for international students interested in completing studies at the University of Manitoba. We are seeking applications for the following positions: Sessional Instructors: Academic English (AES 100) September 3 – December 14, 2013 M-T-W-Th approx. 2:30 – 6:30 contact time All ICM instructors will be hired on a sessional basis with rates of pay comparable to the University of Manitoba sessional rates for English instruction. Each course will involve 15 hours of contact time per week for 13 weeks. ICM is located on the Fort Garry campus of the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. The course material will be consistent with the University of Manitoba ELC Level 4 course. Qualifications: Minimum of TESL Certification and a Bachelors degree. Teaching experience in English as an additional language or related area preferred. ABP Program Assistant POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Asset Building Program Coordinator, the ABP Assistant is a competent individual committed to IRCOM’s vision and mandate to empower newcomer families to integrate into the wider community through affordable transitional housing, programs, and services. This staff is a detail oriented, efficient and resourceful individual with strong interpersonal, organizational and administrative skills, able to meet the challenges of working with a culturally diverse group of community members. The ideal candidate will be able to multi-task in a fast paced environment prioritizing tasks and executing them to a high degree of accuracy. The ABP Assistant will exhibit and uphold core values of respect, non-violence, equality, and team work. BACKGROUND The Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba Inc (IRCOM) is a member of the Winnipeg AssetBuilders Partnership. Founded by SEED Winnipeg Inc, The United Way of Winnipeg and Assiniboine Credit Union, the AssetBuilders Partnership consists of community based organizations which run Asset Building Programs in an effort to assist low-income participants to save for productive assets or household necessities. To help participants meet their savings goals, IRCOM’s Asset Building Program includes money management training classes in an EAL format, matched savings credits that are added to the funds that participants save on their own, opportunities for peer support from fellow participants, and one-to-one support from IRCOM staff. Programs currently offered at IRCOM include the Saving Circle Program, the Individual Development Account (IDA) Program and RESP assistance. For program specific details please visit http://www.ircom.ca/AssetBuildingPrograms.htm In consultation with the ABP Program Coordinator the ABP assistant will refine and further develop IRCOM’s Asset Building Program, undertaking the following tasks. Participant Selection & Retention • Assist with selection and retention of newcomer Participants from a pool of potential applicants using predetermined geographic and income criteria Liaison with SEED Winnipeg and United Way of Winnipeg • Meet with SEED Winnipeg staff as required or needed • Communicate with SEED regarding intake, referrals, progress, and policies • Liaise with United Way of Winnipeg, Assiniboine Credit Union and other Partners Money Management Training Classes • Adapt and Deliver existing money management Training materials to groups of 10-20 EAL participants weekly • Utilize technology(projector, laptop, PowerPoint, videos) to deliver accessible lessons • Create a comfortable learning environment for participants, interpreters and volunteers Registered Education Savings Plan (RESPs) • Liaison with SEED and the Future Save Project • Deliver presentations to the NLI students and other newcomers that live in IRCOM and the community • Follow-up and assist parents who are interested in opening a RESP Human Resource Management • Assist in hiring, scheduling and supervising facilitators and/or interpreters • Work with IRCOM volunteer Coordinator to organize Volunteers • Supervise ABP practicum students and volunteers in the absence of the ABP Coordinator Training: • Attend ABPs and RESP train the trainer workshops with SEED Winnipeg Financial Management • Responsibly handle daily program financial transactions Administration and reporting • Assist in compiling a mid-term and final narrative report as well as financial reports on the project as per funding guidelines • Compose program summary of activities for the IRCOM Annul report and/or for public information in consultation with the coordinator • Compile participant stories for IRCOM Ellen Shout Newsletter and reports Other tasks • Hold information sessions in local schools and partner agencies regarding Asset Building programs & RESP’s • Maintain open communication with the ABP staff, funders, community partners and other IRCOM staff • Attend IRCOM staff meetings • Participate in IRCOM’s Strategic planning • Work with other program staffs on joint projects and develop new programs for IRCOM based on the strategic plan as needed • Other tasks as required Qualifications • Some post-secondary education in community development or any other relevant field • International education/experience is recognized • Experience in community organizing, financial literacy, delivering workshops and outreach is an asset. • Experience working in a non-profit organization is an asset. • Experience working with the newcomer community is an asset • Strong administrative and organizational skills • Valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle is an asset • Demonstrated strong commitment to supporting high needs and English as an Additional Language (EAL) beginners participants • Ability to work independently and in a non-judgmental manner, with respect, professionalism, co-operation, sensitivity and cultural awareness. • Demonstrated ability to work independently, cooperatively and constructively within a multidisciplinary team environment and the ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings. • Ability to manage and adapt positively to very diverse work environment. • Excellent computer skills (e.g. Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook). • Knowledge and understanding of issues impacting newcomers • Must have demonstrated acceptable attendance and job performance relevant to this position. • This position is subject to a Criminal Record and a Child Abuse Registry check in accordance with IRCOM’s Security Check policy. Hours of work • This is a part time one year term position to a maximum of 30 hours per week. The program Assistant’s hours will take place predominantly during IRCOM office hours between 9 pm and 5 pm, Monday to Friday. However, some evenings and weekends are required.
