Adult Literacy Instructor / Westgrove Learning Centre

September 2018 – June 2019 – (16 hours/week)

Westgrove Learning Centre is a unique, grassroots, community-based adult literacy program

located in a Manitoba Housing Development in Charleswood, (76-D Westgrove Way). It offers the

critical function of being the ‘first step on the literacy ladder’ for many living in this low-income

community.

Under the direction of the Westgrove Learning Centre Working Group, the instructor is responsible

for developing individualized educational programs for adult learners based on their personal

learning goals and for providing support for students working on web-based and independent study

programs.

This position is for 16 hours each week, Monday through Thursday, from 9:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. It

extends for a period of 40 weeks from September 2018 – June 2019 with a two week break in

December and one week break in March. Program funding is dependent on grants and private

donations.

Skills and Qualifications:

• Must have adult teaching experience, (Manitoba Teaching Certificate or Adult Education

Certificate preferred). Retired teachers are encouraged to apply.

• Experience with adult learners from all ethnic backgrounds in literacy, adult basic

education, work related training or post-secondary programs is an asset.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a flexible, non-traditional program with

adult learners.

• Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational and writing skills.

• An understanding of adult learning principles and teaching practices.

• Familiarity with issues specifically concerning sole support female parents living in poverty,

Indigenous youth and adults, newcomers to Canada as well as an understanding of a

social housing community.

• A recent Criminal Records/Vulnerable Sector Search and Child Abuse Registry check is

required.

Salary: $30/hour
