2016 Human Rights Award Recipients Announced
The Manitoba
Association for Rights and Liberties, the Canadian Human Rights Commission and
the Manitoba Human Rights Commission have just announced the recipient of the 2016
awards. These awards are given out
every year in celebration of International Human Rights Day.
Human Rights Commitment Award: The 2016 recipient is Tracia’s Trust-
Manitoba’s Strategy to Combat Sexual Exploitation and Human Trafficking. The members of this team will be accepting
the award.
Tracia’s Trust, named in honour of Tracia
Owen who died tragically at the age of 14, is Manitoba’s strategy responding to children and youth at risk of/or
survivors of sexual exploitation and human trafficking. These unsung
heroes of this made-in-Manitoba strategy team are worthy of the Human Rights Commitment
Award of Manitoba. Their daily, collaborative determination and dedication to
protecting and working with our most vulnerable embodies what human rights work
is all about.
The Human
Rights Commitment Award recognizes those who have promoted respect for human
rights and fundamental freedoms and have advanced the rights of Manitobans. The award itself is piece of art, designed this
year by Brandon artist, Chris Cooper.
In addition,
the Award Selection Committee selected two nominations for an Honourable Mention:
Ms Janet Baldwin and Dr. Joseph Kaufert.
Both are currently volunteers at Winnipeg Harvest and have demonstrated
a lifelong commitment to human rights.
Sybil Shack Human Rights Youth
Award: The 2016 recipient is Ms Lauren
Milne. She is a law student from
Manitoba currently studying at the University of North Dakota.
Lauren wrote “The Gender Development Index and Gender Empowerment Measure: An
Analysis of Strengths and Limitations in the Context of South Africa” which
was published in 2014 in Undercurrent: a Canadian Journal for International
Development Studies.
In addition, Lauren traveled to “The Projects
Abroad Human Rights Office” in Cape Town, South Africa to further her academic
and social awareness studies. Her volunteer activities include, Immigrant
Refugee Community of Manitoba, the Institute for International Women’s Rights
Organization, Canadian
Women for Women in Afghanistan and the
Legal Help Centre.
The Sybil
Shack Human Rights Youth Award recognizes the work of a person or group of
people, 25 years old and under, that has had an impact on the advancement of
human rights as guaranteed in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and
human rights legislation in Manitoba.
The
sponsoring partners encourage the public to meet the recipients and join in
celebrating the achievements of these remarkable Manitobans.
The Awards will be presented at a reception at the RBC
Convention Centre, on Wednesday December 8, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. This event is free but you must register to

Job Description
Objectives:
- To move the CMWI towards greater organizational sustainability.
- To enhance the CMWI’s administrative capacity.
- To coordinate program activities that enhances safety, health, economic, and educational opportunities for women and their families.
Under
the direction and supervision of the Board of Directors of CMWI, the Executive
Director is accountable to the Board for the overall management of the CMWI’s
program coordination, planning and development, personnel, and public
relations.
Accountability:
- The Executive Director is responsible to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is responsible for the supervision of the Program & Office Administrator.
- The Executive Director will report monthly to the Board of Directors in a written report of her activities during the month and a summary of the staff’s activities. This report will include a report of the hours worked, including, vacation and sick days.
- To ensure appropriate accounting of hours worked, completed timesheets are to be filed weekly and submitted to the Board payroll personnel.

- Ensure that all funding requirements are met

- To ensure and maintain the financial viability of CMWI through proposal writing and budget development in accordance with the sustainability plan and in relation to the goals of CMWI
- To work with funders to secure long-term funding for CMWI
- Oversee the implementation of all programs and projects within its goals, budget and requirements in a timely manner
- Manage contribution agreements and ensure financial and written reports are completed within deadlines to meet funding body requirements.
Human Resources

- Ensure that personnel policies and procedures are adhered to
- Support the staff in their work through on-going supervision ensuring staff adhere to policies, procedures and task completion

- Oversee the management of volunteers
Program Planning and

- Ensure that program development is in keeping with the goals and abilities of the CMWI
Community Relations:
- Develop and maintain networks and partnerships with multiple community partners and funding agencies
- Liaise with other community organizations with similar mandates, including but not limited to West Central Women’s Resource Centre, IRCOM House, Welcome Place, Winnipeg Central Mosque, Grand Mosque, Islamic Social Services Association and Wolseley Family Place.
Board Relations and
Development:
- Develop recruitment systems for committee participation and collaboration
- Ensure that decisions made by the CMWI Board are communicated to CMWI’s staff as appropriate
Evaluation:
There
will be a 6-months probationary period conducted by the Board of Directors with
monthly evaluations and 1-year appraisal.
Other:
- As the Executive Director you will be reporting to the Board of Directors who is also your employer.

Qualifications/Conditions

- Post-secondary education in the relevant field with experience in proposals writing, or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training

The Education Director is responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of all programs of the adult literacy centre in accordance to the Adult Literacy Act. In addition, the ED is responsible for the welfare of learners, staff and volunteers, budget planning and administration.
The literacy program is currently a part-time program. Learners attend Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 9:30 am-12:30pm and 1:15pm – 4:15pm and runs from September – June. The Education Director is expected to be at the centre Monday-Thursday from 9 am – 4:30 pm with the expectation that the ED will work additional hours to meet with students and staff as necessary, will have to work some evenings and Fridays for board meetings and other meetings; as well as during the summer to complete reports and/or other matters dealing with the centre. Responsibilities:
Responsible for assigned cases from intake to follow-up, determining and implementing appropriate Restorative Justice options.
Schedulevolunteer mediators/facilitators for mediation.
Follow-up on recommendations, monitor agreements, receive restitution payments and/or support arrangements of the agreement as appropriate
Manage cases within timelines set out by the Crown Attorney.
Monitor, support, motivate and evaluate volunteers.
Maintain a viable, working schedule that results in a dynamic Volunteer Pool.
Scheduleprofessional development opportunities for volunteers.
Support and Accountability:This is a one-year termposition which reports to the Restorative ActionCentre Coordinator.
Salary range:$31,550-40,252per annum and is commensurate with education and experience(full benefit package after 6 months).
