POSITION
SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the After School Programs Manager, the HEY
Teacher is a competent individual committed to IRCOM’s vision and mandate to
empower newcomer families to integrate into the wider community through
affordable transitional housing, programs, and services. This staff is a detail
oriented, efficient and resourceful individual with strong interpersonal,
organizational and administrative skills, able to meet the challenges of
working with a culturally diverse group of community members. The ideal
candidate will be able to multi-task in a fast paced environment prioritizing
tasks and executing them to a high degree of accuracy. The HEY Teacher will
exhibit and uphold core values of respect, non-violence, equality, and team
work.
Objective
The objective of
the HEY (Homework Education and Youth) Teacher position is to oversee the HEY
Program, an after-school homework and educational supports program for newcomer
youth. Working closely with the After School Program (ASP) management team, the
HEY Teacher plans, implements, monitors and helps evaluate this program. The
HEY Teacher is responsible for designing and developing teaching methods and
instructional materials to meet newcomer students' needs, abilities, and
interests. Furthermore, the HEY Teacher will provide newcomer students with the
essential skills to become proficient in numeracy, writing, oral communication,
computer skills, math, science, etc.
Working closely with the HEY
team, the HEY Teacher will serve as a liaison between the newcomer student,
his/her family and the school, especially with respect to cultural and language
differences, providing cross-cultural information to all parties that foster
positive relationships. She / he will prepare newcomer students for post
secondary education by encouraging them to explore more learning opportunities
and giving them the tools to persevere with their educational goals. The HEY
program is a major program of IRCOM’s After School Program and as such, this
position is integral to the success of the overall After School Program.
Core Responsibilities
Coordinate the HEY team (HEY staff and
volunteers) provide them with day-to-day supervision and coaching (support the
team in implementation of program activities, facilitate learning conversations
with students and staff, work with staff to inform parents of successes and
challenges, etc.)
Liaise with school staff and the HEY/ASP
teams to provide ‘wrap around,’ holistic support for program participants
Spearhead educational supports (e.g., literacy pairs, homework
assistance) in order to assist newcomer youth in language skills, numeracy, math,
science and problem solving skills and in setting promising career goals
Consult with teachers and the HEY/ASP teams
to determine individual strengths and challenges of student(s)
Continually assess student progress toward
mastery of standards and keep students and parents well informed of student
progress by collecting and tracking data, providing daily feedback, and
occasional home visits
Maintain Student Learning Profiles which
document students’ skills and learning
Utilize ongoing informal and formal
assessment to measure effectiveness of teaching and optimize student learning,
adapting instruction when needed
Develop
learning materials (grades 9 –
12) that are curriculum linked and that support student
learning objectives and planned activities
Provide adaptations, using multiple
teaching strategies, for learners from wide range of backgrounds, including
English as an Additional Language learners
Develop short lesson plans (e.g., in math,
reading, writing and social skills, etc.) for targeted small groups of youth, incorporating varied instructional strategies
and active learning experiences to dynamically engage students
Assist the Educational Assistant and ASP
team with programming for students with special needs or specific learning
needs, by modeling lessons and approaches and providing hands on activities
Assist in the development of informational
materials for parents and facilitate the sharing of successful parental
involvement strategies
Establish rapport with students and
families from different cultural origins by creating a positive and respectful
environment and encouraging dialogue through regular communication
Support the youth in adapting to the classroom
environment, school structure, and routines to enhance student engagement, as
well as support broader cultural adaptation
Liaise with community agencies involved
with students and advocate on behalf of students/ parents as needed
Administration
In coordination with ASP, develop and
maintain a program calendar
Develop, collect, organize and collate key
program documents (including attendance, sign-up, release forms, report cards,
etc.)
Coordinate HEY team scheduling and program
scheduling
Assess and provide feedback to the ASP management
team about the impact of various program activities on the academic and social
growth of program participants
Coordinate informal assessments related to
learning / school engagement
Assist in conducting program evaluation and
collect data on indicators of success
Report individual student and program data
to the funder as needed
Provide formal and informal reflections on
the program’s strengths and challenges
Ensure HEY/ASP procedures and guidelines
and IRCOM policies are followed
Assist in facilitating volunteer
orientation sessions with the ASP team and the Volunteer Program Coordinator
Coordinate HEY team meetings and
participate in ASP team meetings and activities
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Certification as a teacher in Manitoba plus
a minimum of 3 years direct high school teaching experience
Experience
using the Manitoba Education EAL Stages and/or the Canadian Language Benchmarks
to inform lessons and planning
Knowledge
of diagnostic assessments and Assessment for Learning to determine specific
learning / programming needs of youth
Knowledge
of core Provincial curricula and ability to support newcomer students to
succeed within that curricula
Knowledge
and experience of teaching utilizing an integrated approach
Demonstrated
ability to implement effective academic programs and behavioral strategies in
various settings
Experience
with later literacy and numeracy assessments
Experience
with student goal setting and career planning
Strong
organizational skills and the ability to prioritize work
Demonstrated
ability to work in a team and collaboratively with other staff and outside
agencies
Strong
written and oral English communication skills
Extensive
computer experience with Microsoft applications and experience creating,
designing and manipulating spreadsheets
Excellent
cross-cultural and team work skills
Strong
understanding of the immigration process and challenges with the school system
and learning that newcomer youth, both refugees and immigrants, might face
Must
be open-minded, resourceful, highly motivated, creative and independent
Demonstrated
strong commitment to supporting and empowering the newcomer community through
previous volunteering / community involvement
International
education/experience is recognized
Experience
or training in resource, special education and/or counseling an asset
Knowledge
of a second language is an asset
Must
undergo Criminal Record Check, as well as have a clear Child Abuse Registry
Check
Hours of work
This is a full-time position for a maximum of 37.5 hours per week. The HEY
Teacher’s hours will take place between 1 – 9 PM, Monday to Friday; however
some evenings and weekends may be required as per the needs of IRCOM programs.
Other
The salary range for this position begins at $39, 732.00
