FOOD SKILLS PROGRAMMER

NorWest Co-op Community Health is looking for a Garden and Food Skills Programmer for the NorWest Community Food Centre project. The NorWest Community Food Centre is a new initiative which offers a shared meal program, cooking, gardening and advocacy programs that improve access to healthy food in a way that maintains dignity and builds community. We ask that applicants share our commitment to community development, food security and social justice.
The Garden and Food Skills programmer will be responsible for urban agriculture activities at and around the Community Food Centre site during the summer months. The candidate will support community members including volunteers, program participants, vulnerable adults, seniors, children and youth to use and maintain community gardening space. Thus, this dynamic position will involve hands on gardening skills (planting, weeding, watering, harvesting) and the facilitation of garden and food based educational activities (to build skills and knowledge around gardening, composting, food production and food systems). Other tasks include operating pizza-making sessions at an outdoor bake oven, conducting garden tours, organizing special community events such as field trips and workshops as well as community outreach. During winter months and as needed this position will support on site food skills development and cooking programs.
Qualifications
Post-secondary degree in a related field of study
3 years of experience with program development, group facilitation, community outreach
Experience in organic gardening (through paid employment or volunteer work)
Ability to work outdoors May – September, physical labour necessary, in hot or inclement weather
Experience working in a leadership capacity with volunteers and community members
Demonstrated ability to move people from knowledge to action; ability to inspire, teach and empower community members to engage in positive change
Demonstrated ability to work with and show sensitivity to those who experience poverty/discrimination
Commitment to social justice and knowledge of food system issues
Demonstrated ability to work with diverse communities
Commercial food preparation experience and knowledge of nutritional issues an asset
Safe food handlers training required
Salary range $20.083-$23.282/hour and benefits as per CUPE
