POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the After School Program Teacher, the Educational Assistant is a competent individual committed to IRCOM’s vision and mandate to empower newcomer families to integrate into the wider community through affordable transitional housing, programs, and services. This staff is a detail oriented, efficient and resourceful individual with strong interpersonal, organizational and administrative skills, able to meet the challenges of working with a culturally diverse group of community members. The ideal candidate will be able to multi-task in a fast paced environment prioritizing tasks and executing them to a high degree of accuracy. The Educational Assistant will exhibit and uphold core values of respect, non-violence, equality, and team work.
Objective
The objective of the Educational Assistant position is to assist the ASP Teacher with educational programs and academic support and instruction provided to students with special needs. The EA will participate in the development and implementation of an appropriate curriculum to newcomer students that supports the acceleration of their English and is aligned with EAL standards. Furthermore, the ASP Educational Assistant is responsible for keeping detailed records of student and provides suggestions and feedback to ASP Teacher and ASP Program Coordinator. This position is integral to the success of the After School Program.
Program Support
Consult with teacher / ASP staff to determine individual strengths and challenges of student(s)
Work one-on-one or in small groups with special needs EAL newcomer students
Help the ASP Teacher with programming by modeling lessons and providing hands on activities
Model effective instructional strategies
Provide support to newcomer students adjusting to the classroom environment and routines
Support families of students with special needs by sharing of successful parental involvement strategies
Liaise with community agencies involved with the student(s)
Teach students diagnosed with learning disabilities about their disability (with parental approval)
Coordinating informal assessments related to learning
Collecting data on indicators of success
Other duties as assigned
Responsibilities
Participate in and conduct a needs assessment with the students, summarize results, and design study materials according to the results
Maintain a teaching log and accurate student records and submit attendance to the ASP Teacher monthly
Work closely with the ASP Program Coordinator, the ASP Teacher and the ASP volunteers to help the student(s) strengthen their oral skills and work towards better integrating into the classroom
Engage IRCOM’s language training initiatives and utilize IRCOM volunteers in delivering the lessons and activities at IRCOM
Track daily attendance hours of youth in program
Collect and prepare learning materials, questionnaires and use assistive technology to assist student learning
Plan and implement the literacy program

Qualifications
Educational Assistant diploma / certificate plus a minimum 3 years direct experience or post-secondary education or diploma (in progress) in a relevant field (education)
Experience working with special needs students
Knowledge of assessments to determine specific learning / programming needs of youth
Demonstrated ability to implement effective academic programs and behavioural strategies
Strong organizational, written and oral English communication skills and the ability to prioritize work
Excellent cross-cultural and team work skills
Ability to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds
Must be open-minded, resourceful, highly motivated, creative and independent
Demonstrated strong commitment to supporting and empowering the newcomer community through previous volunteering / community involvement
International education / experience is recognized
Newcomer experience is an asset
Knowledge of a second language is an asset
Counseling / Resource experience is an asset
Non-violent Crisis Intervention Training is an asset
Must undergo Criminal Record Check, as well as Child Abuse Registry Check
Hours of work
This is a part-time position for a maximum of 30 hours per week. The E.A.s hours will take place predominantly during After School Program Homework Club hours between 4 pm and 9 pm, Monday to Friday. However, staff may have to work some day time and weekends. Overtime work is compensated by time and a half off, and must be authorized by the Executive Director or designate.
