Public Policy Coordinator

 The Canadian CED Network is inviting applications for a Public Policy Coordinator in our Winnipeg office to guide our public policy and advocacy process. The right candidate will have a unique blend of skills and experience in facilitation, writing and collective action as well as a keen interest in social and economic change. They will have some familiarity with common research and evaluation methodologies. They’ll join a dynamic team of organizers and capacity builders aligned with our organizational values and committed to fostering and responding to member-leadership. They will be curious and passionate about community development, poverty reduction and social economy enterprises and will want to bring people and ideas together for stronger collective action.

ABOUT THE CANADIAN CED NETWORK

The Canadian CED Network (CCEDNet) is a values-based, non-profit organization working to build local economies that strengthen communities and benefit everyone. We have several hundred members throughout Canada working at the grassroots level in a wide variety of settings and with a range of communities. The Manitoba regional network is strong and active with a wide-ranging public policy mandate. As a staff team, we are guided by members and are focused on strengthening skills and knowledge to build capacity, growing and using the Network’s collective voice to engage with the public and governments, and connecting community economic developers to each other and needed resources.

DUTIES

Reporting to the Manitoba Regional Director, this team member will:
  • Take the lead on coordinating the annual Policy Summit. This includes:
    • Motivating members to consider new or amended resolution proposals;
    • Assisting members with information gathering and drafting policy resolutions;
    • Preparing and facilitating a half-day members Policy Summit;
    • Finalizing and sharing a policy package compiling all active resolutions.
  • Coordinate action with the Regional Director to advance the approved policy mandate through:
    • Preparing written communications products tailored to different audiences on CCEDNet Manitoba’s policy priorities and research activities including briefs, letters, budget submissions, website texts, and newsletter submissions; 
    • Promoting CCEDNet Manitoba’s policy priorities and research findings at events, meetings with politicians and/or civil servants, hearings and media events;
    • Representing CCEDNet Manitoba and occasionally providing operational support at various collectives, coalitions or campaigns;
    • Convening working groups and other committees to support CCEDNet led advocacy;
    • Networking and building relationships with a wide variety of other stakeholders so we can better identify opportunities for partnership, collaboration or supportive advocacy.
  • Provide staff support to the National Policy Council when required, and support national policy action as requested by CCEDNet’s Executive Director.
  • Build capacity for public policy analysis and advocacy in members through facilitating workshops or meetings on related topics, providing direct service to support campaigns or other actions as appropriate.
  • If required, execute research projects based on an established timeline, budget, deliverables and reports to funders or partners.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of and commitment to community economic development (CED) principles, social justice, poverty reduction, and community development approaches
  • Proven experience facilitating meetings, small and large group discussions with a focus on consultation and collective decision making
  • Working knowledge of the public policy environment in Manitoba, including how relevant government departments are organized, typical policy change and legislative processes and the non-governmental stakeholders actively advocating on social and economic issues
  • Strong written and oral communication skills that can be adapted to various audiences, formats, and styles including government briefs, news releases, presentations, and online communications
  • Ability to work well within collaborative structures and coalitions
  • Post-secondary college or university degree or demonstrable experience in a related field (politics, economics, public administration, sociology, etc.)
  • Detail-oriented, independent, professional, and able to work in a flexible, open-office environment on an area with multiple priorities

HOURS AND PAY

This is a permanent position at 30 hours / week, with possibility of negotiation or increase to full time dependent on available funding. Some evenings and weekend hours may be required, reconciled with time off when operationally feasible. The schedule can be flexible. Starting wage is $22.76 / hr.
This position is based at our Social Enterprise Centre office. However, this space is not currently fully accessible and we don’t want this to be a barrier. Please contact us if you are considering applying and require accommodation.

Events and Communications Coordinator

The Canadian CED Network is seeking a dynamic, organized, and collaborative person with a strong understanding of community economic development, event planning, online communications and community engagement to fill the position of Events and Communications Coordinator in our Manitoba regional office. This position is focused on CCEDNet-Manitoba’s learning events including our flagship annual conference, the Manitoba Gathering of community builders. Responsible for identifying skill and knowledge needs through member engagement, you will find appropriate facilitators and create learning and networking events that meet those needs. The successful candidate will also work to build and maintain our online presence, connecting with our national communications team and other program staff to support Manitoba communications. You are a strong communicator that can contribute to good relationships and the provision of clear and accessible information about network activities.

DUTIES INCLUDE

Reporting to the Manitoba Regional Director, and working collaboratively with all Manitoba staff:

  • Take the lead on planning and implementation of The Manitoba Gathering.
    • This includes working with an engaged Planning Team to recruit and select workshop presenters, plan and implement event logistics, recruit and manage event volunteers, promote the event, provide audience services, and evaluate success.
  • Plan, market, execute, evaluate, and report on CCEDNet – Manitoba’s learning events including:
    • Monthly workshops on a range of skill-based topics,
    • Planning for Your Organization’s Financial Sustainability Series,
    • Other events as required or requested by members.
  • Provide local communications support as time permits, including:
    • Working with the Regional Director to re-develop www.ccednet-rcdec.ca/manitoba
    • Coordinating with national communications staff and program communication leads to cross-promote and ensure effective communication of our work, including social media
    • Supporting program staff with their communication needs
    • Promoting events
    • Assisting with member communications, including maintaining member records, assisting with renewal and sending regular member-exclusive communications
    • Other related duties as they arise.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • Demonstrated experience with program coordination and/or event planning is necessary
  • Demonstrated experience with communications including website content management and writing for a variety of audiences is essential
  • Knowledge of and commitment to community economic development and social justice
  • Post-secondary education or a combination of relevant experience in a related field such as CED, non-profit administration, adult or community-based education, event planning, or communications
  • Organization and detail management skills are essential, along with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, team environment
  • Familiarity with our communications platforms an asset (included: Drupal, CIVI CRM, Wordpress, MailChimp, G-Suite, and a variety of social media platforms)

Working Conditions and Wage

This is a part-time position typically 21 hours / week until June 30, 2019, with likely extension of contract. The hourly wage range is $19.29 - $21.09, commensurate with experience. Given the nature of event management, overtime is often required at peak periods which is reconciled through compensatory time off when operationally possible. This is especially true in the fall, leading up to The Gathering.
