GIMLI—Premier Greg Selinger will lead a Skills and Jobs Tour to connect more families with skills training for good jobs, here in Manitoba.

“Today our province is building like never before and all this momentum offers good job and training opportunities for families,” said Premier Selinger.  “That’s why we’re creating new apprenticeship and college training opportunities, to give our kids more options and help set them on the path to a good career and a brighter future.”

The Skills and Jobs Tour will provide Manitobans with information on preparing for entering some of the province’s most in-demand jobs, the premier said.  Public meetings in several communities will give Manitoba families the chance to speak with and hear from local employers, training and education providers and provincial apprenticeship staff.

“A good career means our young people can have the chance to build a good life and buy a home, right here in Manitoba,” Jobs and the Economy Minister Theresa Oswald said.  “If you’re in school or already working and wanting to train for a better job, the Manitoba government can help you get the skills you need to build a bright future here in our province.”  

“Whether it’s an apprenticeship, college or university, there are no wrong doors to a good education and a better career,” Education Minister James Allum said.  “This tour will help more Manitobans tap into the opportunities all around us.”

The first week-long Skills and Jobs Tour will run from Aug. 18 to 22, with community town hall meetings at the following locations:

  • Gimli – today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lakeview Resort and Conference Centre, 10 Centre St.;
  • Brandon – tomorrow from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Assiniboine Community College, Main Campus Cafeteria, 1430 Victoria Ave. E.;
  • Dauphin – Wednesday, Aug. 20 from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Watson Art Centre, 104 First Ave. NW; and
  • Swan River – Thursday, Aug. 21 from 7 to 8:30 p.m., War Veterans Community Hall,
    119 Sixth Ave N.

Development and Communications Manager

LITE is a non-profit organization that supports Community Economic Development by investing in employment initiatives and other long term solutions to poverty in Winnipeg’s inner city.

Reporting directly to LITE’s Executive Director and in conjunction with LITE’s Development Committee, the Development Coordinator will be responsible for achieving the organization’s fundraising goals and engaging sponsors and donors in ongoing support. This includes leveraging key relationships and contacts within and outside of LITE and the Community Development sector to ensure LITE meets its fundraising goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • In conjunction with the Development Committee, creates and implements annual development plan as well as overall organizational public relations strategy, and marketing plan

Education:

Job Profile

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Public Engagement Coordinator is an integral part of the MCIC staff team. The Public Engagement Coordinator is primarily responsible for planning and executing events, public engagement activities and capacity building workshops for the  public and member agencies as outlined in the funding agreement with the Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada. Reader Opportunity at Manitoba Hydro Utility Services
Manitoba Hydro Utility Services (MHUS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Manitoba Hydro and is contracted by the Utility to provide meter reading services.

Selection Process

Candidates are selected for interviews and then may move on to a meter reading test. The meter reading test is administered at the company's location at 35 Sutherland Avenue.

Requirements

  • Grade 12 Graduate;
  • Valid Driver's License (abstract is required);
  • Must possess a vehicle for work;
  • Criminal Record Check (required prior to hire);
  • Physical Examination.

Duties

Meter readers:
  • read both outside and inside electric and natural gas meters;
  • utilize computerized handheld technology to enter reads;
  • work within the City of Winnipeg and in rural districts;
  • walk an average of 5.5 to 6.5 hours per day.

Typical Hours of Work

Employees hired as casual are not provided guaranteed hours and may be called in as needed. Youth Care Practitioners (Full time, part time and term positions available) - Specialized Individual Placement Service

Macdonald Youth Services requires experienced Youth Care Practitioners to work with the Specialized Individual Placement Service. The successful applicants will be working with high needs female and /or male adolescents who are dealing with various mental health issues and/or the effects of FASD.


Duties and Responsibilities: Assists the treatment team in formulating and evaluating treatment objectives involving family members and significant others whenever possible; Participates in the development of Treatment Plan Objectives to youth specific day programming; Identifies opportunities for treatment objectives to be achieved within the community school and family; Maintains an awareness of the needs of the youth and structures a therapeutic living unit that attends to the physical and emotional needs of the youth; Observes, evaluates and records daily events to assist with treatment planning and implementation; Ensures that legal and human rights of the youth are respected and preserved; Completes incident reporting as outlined by Licensing Standards; Reports concerning behaviours and\or safety issues to the Program Manager and / or Coordinator; Provides, supports, participates and supervise youth in a variety of community activities Acts as a healthy role model and ensures that the needs of the youth are the primary focus in the treatment process; Performs house cleaning and maintenance duties including yard work and snow removal. Actively develops positive agency relations with external collaterals; Provides 24-hour supervision of clients. During the day and evening shifts the SIP staff provides one to one supervision at all times; Any unsupervised outings are part of the treatment plan and supported by the Social Worker, Clinician/Therapist and Program Manager.

Essential Requirements:
  • Child and Youth Care Diploma or Certificate or a Degree in an applicable Human Services field, or a combination of education and experience may be considered;
  • An understanding of trauma, substance abuse and mental illness including FASD;
  • Ability to perform duties within a team environment that focuses on establishing collaborative relationships between care providers and youth, and places priority on youth’s safety, choice and control;
  • Knowledge of resiliency theory, and the principles of the Circle of Courage;
  • Current First Aid / CPR / AED certificate is mandatory;
  • Valid Driver’s License;
  • Possess a current (within 3 months) or willingness to obtain a Criminal Record Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search);
  • Possess a current (within 3 months) or willingness to obtain a Child Abuse Registry Check;
  • Willingness to obtain Suicide Intervention skills training;
  • Knowledge of aboriginal culture and language would be an asset.

Salary: $27,727.49 to $43,000 d.o.q per annum. MYS offers a competitive benefit package and pension plan. Salary will be prorated to the part time and term positions.

Hours: Varies depending on which position hired for. Successful applicants will be required to work a variety of shifts including days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
